STUDIO MUSEUM IN HARLEM: Lyle Ashton Harris: Self/Portrait and Spiral:
Perspectives on an African American Art Collective
Lyle Ashton Harris: Self/Portrait presents a series of twenty large format Polaroid
photographs of the artist’s friends and family, exploring the intimate relationship
between artist and subject in the creative process of portraiture. Spiral presents the
work of the New York–based collective of African-American artists that came together in
the 1960s to discuss their relationship to the civil rights movement and the shifting
landscape of American art, culture and politics.
BROOKLYN MUSEUM: Eva Hesse: Spectres 1960 and Sanford Biggers: Sweet
Funk – an Introspective
Eva Hesse: Spectres 1960 presents a series of nineteen oil paintings made by the artist
when she was 24 years old. Sanford Biggers: Sweet Funk – an Introspective brings
together large scale sculptures and installations which challenge and reinterpret symbols
and legacies that inform contemporary America. From Buddhism to slavery to American
musical traditions, the artist’s work examines connections between a broad range of
subject matter.
Classes are an hour-and-a-half long. Classes are limited to 15 people.
$ 440 for a 10-class session. Individual classes are $ 55
