ART AFTER HOURS

ART IN THE MAKING: PRINTS, DRAWING & PHOTOGRAPHY

APRIL 20, MAY 18, JUNE 8, 6 –8 pm

Please join Margaret Mathews Berenson and me for our ongoing series of ART AFTER HOURS tours. This spring we are expanding our program to include printmaking, papermaking and photography. We will visit a print shop, a paper conservator, an artist’s studio and a photography lab to get a behind-the-scenes experience and see how work is brought to fruition. These evenings are designed to be intimate and informative and, we hope, inspiring.  Refreshments will be served at the end of each evening.

Single sessions are $50 per person. We are offering attractive discounts (20%) when you subscribe to the series of 3 sessions ($120). A sign-up form below is included for your convenience and a brief description of each evening is included for your reference.

APRIL 20: LAMONT STUDIO & GALLERY and DAVID SHAPIRO’S ARTIST STUDIO

LAUMONT STUDIO:

A guided tour of Laumont Studio & Editions Gallery, a state-of-the-art fine art printing lab and gallery, specializing in digital processes and fine printing. Experienced technicians at Laumont collaborate with artists and photographers to produce museum-quality prints and editions. We will see first-hand how some of these prints are produced through highly sophisticated computer-scanning and retouching programs. Attention to craftsmanship and full-service for artists is key from printing large-format photographs to mounting, framing and crating for museum shows. Many influential artists have turned to powerful new digital techniques to produce works of great quality and originality. In the last 12 years the Laumont Studio has produced editions with Ross Bleckner, Cecily Brown, James Casebere, Nan Goldin, Dan Graham, Peter Halley, Roni Horn, Vik Muniz, Jack Pierson, Richard Prince, Andres Serrano, Stephen Shore, Lorna Simpson, and Andrew Wyeth among others.

DAVID SHAPIRO: Artist Studio

An exciting opportunity to meet the artist and experience critically acclaimed abstract painter David Shapiro’s artwork in his working environment. Shapiro creates sophisticated compositions in which color, form, and texture combine to evoke a deeply meditative consciousness and tranquility. Often likened to the visual equivalent of a mantra, Shapiro’s work is based on Eastern traditions and concepts, such as "Mudra" (Buddhist hand symbols) and "Savasan" (the lying-down posture in yogic practices). The artist has exhibited throughout the United States for over three decades. His work is included in the permanent public collections of such respected institutions as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Kunsthalle der Stadt in Nuremberg, Germany.

MAY 18:  Home & studio of Martina Yamin, collector & PAPER conservator

Martina Yamin, a preeminent paper conservator as well as an avid art collector, displays her extensive collection of drawings on four floors of a charming Manhattan townhouse. Her collection includes works on paper by artists such as Fred Tomaselli, Shahzia Sikander, Tony Smith, Kiki Smith, Marlene Dumas, Sol LeWitt, Ernesto Neto, Lee Lozano, Sterling Ruby, Roxy Paine, Paul Chan and 2010 Whitney Biennial artist, Jessica Jackson Hutchins. All four floors of this remarkable collection will be open during our private tour as well as her paper conservation laboratory with treatment demonstrations on the top floor.

JUNE 8:  LOWER EASTSIDE PRINTSHOP and Elizabeth Foundation

Continuing our exploration of techniques and processes, we’ll visit the Lower Eastside Printshop (relocated to midtown) and see how a copper plate can transform a sheet of paper into art.  The Printshop was founded in 1968 as a not for profit studio to help artists learn printmaking and provide 24- hour studio access and equipment.  Serving over 160 artists annually the LES Printshop has worked with many important artists throughout their 30 year history, including Kiki Smith, Phillip Taaffe, Paul Chan, Amy Cutler, Matthew Day Jackson and Kara Walker.

The Elizabeth Foundation offers a hard-to-find commodity in NYC--affordable workspace for artists as well as opportunities for career development by offering professional seminars and collaborative projects with collectors and curators.  We will visit the studio of one of the 80 artists in residence.

ART IN SANTA FE

Join us in Santa Fe, June 23-27 for SITE Santa Fe, the important contemporary art exhibition around which my business partner, Margaret Mathews Berenson and I have planned an art filled excursion.  Flights to Santa Fe are now direct from LaGuardia on American Airlines and the pueblo style rooms at the charming Inn at the Alameda are awaiting your reservation.

We will take you behind the scenes of several museums and into private collections housed in adobe homes with views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.  Of course, the cuisine of the area has to be enjoyed, so our meals together range from the renown Aqua Santa to local hang out Harry's Roadhouse.

Our itinerary will give you access to behind the scenes experiences and group size will be limited to insure an intimate and informative experience.  Air flights and hotels are not included in the cost, but we've reserved rooms at a special rate of $ 180/ per room double or single occupancy.
